Government supports Cypriot gastronomy, says interior minister

Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting Cypriot gastronomy and supporting rural communities at the 45th Kolokasi Festival in Sotira on Friday.

In his speech, Ioannou emphasised President Nikos Christodoulides’ dedication to implementing policies that bolster the agricultural sector. These policies aim to improve production quality, provide modern infrastructure and encourage young people to pursue careers in agriculture.

Speaking about the festival, Ioannou highlighted its significance, noting that it is one of Cyprus’ longest-running events and a cultural landmark for both the Famagusta district and the island as a whole.

“It is no coincidence that in 2016, the European Commission recognised the exceptional quality of Sotira’s kolokasi by granting it Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status,” the minister added.

He further praised the rich cultural and culinary traditions of the kokkinochoria (red soil villages).

In closing, Ioannou expressed satisfaction with the efforts of the newly established municipality of Ayia Napa, the Famagusta District Self-Governance Organisation, and the Sotira municipal authorities in supporting local development.
