Brit couple killed in Majorca flash floods as boyfriend swept nearly two miles by torrent of water while on canyon hike
A BRIT couple died when they were swept away by flash floods in Majorca as the boyfriend was carried nearly two miles by the water.
Alexander Johnson, 32, was tragically found dead yesterday bringing to an end the desperate search after his partner Sarah Jane Thompson, 26, was found earlier this week.
Guardia Civil officials estimate that Mr Johnson was carried nearly two miles by the flood waters.
And they have issued a stark warning to tourists about the dangers of hiking in bad weather.
Local media reports seven people have lost their lives in torrents and ravines since 2017.
Rescuers using a helicopter managed to find Mr Johnson’s body in a flooded canyon in the Torrent de Pareis in Sa Calobra, reports the Majorca Daily Bulletin.
He was found after the water levels in the flooded area had dropped significantly on Friday.
The couple had been caught in a storm on Tuesday after water levels rapidly rose in the river gorge.
Cops rescued a dozen hikers who had been stranded during the flood via helicopter.
Some of the rescued hikers told the couple had been swept away in the downpour.
The couple had travelled to Majorca with family and friends for a late summer holiday, reports The Telegraph.
Police quickly found Ms Thompson – before launching a days-long search for Mr Johnson.
Cops found a shoe belonging to the missing man on Thursday, before finding his remains on Friday.
Parts of the island have been affected by severe flooding following heavy rain, with the situation expected to worsen as the island continues on orange alert.
The Civil Guardia had to stop their search for several hours on Tuesday, waiting for the storm to clear.
They said: “The Civil Guard yesterday rescued 10 people who were trapped in the Torrent de Pareis by a torrent of water.”
The rescued walkers, two Spaniards and the rest French, German and British.
But they said two members of a group of five “had been swept away by a torrent of water and they had been unable to do anything to save them and didn’t know where they were.”
Footage from the scene showed water rushing through a resort at the mouth of Pareis River in Majorca.
A police officer attached to the search operation issued a warning – urging people to take proper equipment when they go hiking in Majorca.
He said: “It’s a very demanding route, which you have to do with the right equipment.
“Our Greim unit established an operation throughout the day there to prevent possible accidents involving hikers who were in the area given the forecast of heavy rain.”
They warned tourists in previous years have ended up “getting trapped” by high waters.
In a statement, the Foreign Office told The Sun: “We are supporting the families of a British man and woman who are missing in Majorca and are in contact with the local authorities.”
