BE LOYAL: Convert Tesco Clubcard or Nectar loyalty points into vouchers for future grocery trips or discounted home essentials.

Add a student to your loyalty accounts so they can use points for food shopping while you earn them at home.

SHOP SEASONALS: End-of-season deals can help furnish student digs on a budget. Dunelm has a sale on bedding and soft furnishings, while Homebase and B&Q have great kitchenware deals.

Argos is also running a homeware sale, with the Silentnight Home Comforts complete uni sleep kit reduced from £36 to £23.98.

BE TECH SMART: Tech is not cheap, so if they already have a student card or uni email, get them to sign up for a free Lenovo account at lenovo.com for at least 20 per cent off new purchases.

Dell offers a similar discount, plus free delivery, for students. Don’t have a student email set up yet?

Then email dell_advantage_student@dell.com to ask for a discount voucher.

CASH RETURN: Get cashback from hundreds of retailers at rakuten.co.uk, with a ten per cent bonus on new first-week buys.

Quidco.com has £18.75 cashback for students who open a Santander Edge student current account. It comes with a four-year railcard for bargain trips home.

BANK BONUS: Check with your bank for student perks and referral bonuses. NatWest offers £100 cash plus a four-year Tastecard for discount dining with its student account.

Nationwide is giving £100 cash and £120 in Just Eat vouchers with its account.

BULK BUY: Stock up on snacks, toiletries and cleaning supplies through discount websites.

For example, lowpricefoods.com has packs of 15 cereal bars from £3.50. Sites such as latestfreestuff.co.uk give away free samples.
