Teddy Sheringham expects one Spurs attacker to be ‘better’ this season
Teddy Sheringham expects Brennan Johnson to step up this season and deliver consistent displays now that he has had time to settle into his new surroundings.
Spurs signed Brennan Johnson for big money
Although Johnson finished last season with 15 goal contributions to his name, there are still some question marks about the winger, who has tended to blow hot and cold since arriving at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
While the 23-year-old’s pace and directness can be devastating when he is at his best, he can be a frustrating player to watch at times, given his tendency to be clumsy in the final third.
The Wales international will be aware that he needs to step up his game this season to be assured of a place in Tottenham’s starting eleven, given the competition for places for the wide births at Hotspur Way.
Brennan Johnson has struggled so far this year
Johnson has not had the best of starts to the season and has come under heavy criticism from some sections of social media, but Sheringham believes that the winger will turn things around sooner rather than later.
The Tottenham legend told Football.London: “I’m expecting better performances from Brennan Johnson this season, more consistent performances. That’s what you expect from your players in their second season at the club.
“I’m still not sure what his best position is. Is he a right-winger? Is he a centre-forward? I’m not really sure.
“He’s a little bit like Marcus Rashford, in that he’s a player that plays wide, but you wouldn’t call him a winger because he doesn’t really get that many crosses into the box.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Johnson always looks much better when he comes on as a substitute than when he starts matches.
I would not be surprised if Ange decides to primarily use the winger as an impact substitute over the next few months.
