Sports briefs: Marin Catholic, San Marin win volleyball tournaments

Freshman Carolina Delaney led the team in kills as the Marin Catholic girls volleyball team went 5-0 to win the East County Invitational at Deer Valley High on Saturday.

Delaney posted 43 kills as the Wildcats (8-2) picked up wins against Mission San Jose, Carondelet, Tam, Branson, and Foothill.

Krystal Rose Huff added 32 kills and Chloe Allcroft had 26 kills. Setter Rania Brody had 107 assists and Sierra Ellison had 10 aces. Ellison (41), Brody (29) and Huff (24) were the team leaders in digs.

MC also posted a four-set win in a non-league game against Monte Vista on Friday. Delaney again led the way with 16 kills. Brody had a team-high 28 assists.

  • Brianna Nottingham was named tournament MVP as San Marin went 6-0 to win the San Lorenzo Invitational on Saturday. Nottingham had 35 kills, 18 digs, and eight aces for the Mustangs (12-1). Sylvia Tuerke was also selected to the all-tournament team with 23 kills, 14 digs, and six aces. Gabi Ginocchio had 65 assists and 12 aces and Paige Brumley had 23 kills. Sawyer Zappelli (19 kills, six blocks), Brooke Brumley (25 digs, seven aces, seven assists), and Savannah Reynolds (14 digs, nine aces) also had good performances.

Women’s volleyball

Dominican University opened the season with a five-set win against Jessup University on Friday before dropping matches against Chico State and Stanislaus State on Saturday.

Braenwynne Matthews had a team-high 13 kills against William Jessup, as the Penguins (1-2) won the first two sets before pulling out the fifth set 15-12 to seal the win. Avery Schneider added 11 kills and Kali Young had 10 kills and 19 digs for Dominican. Camille Rivers had 44 assists and 14 digs.

Boys water polo

Redwood opened up the season on a positive note, going 4-0 on Friday and Saturday to win the Roche Tournament. The Giants (4-0) survived a tough battle against Menlo in the title game, prevailing 11-1 in overtime.

The semifinal match against La Jolla was also a big test with Redwood winning 16-15. Redwood defeated Clovis North 11-6 in the first game on Friday then defeated Davis 16-6 to advance to the semifinals.
