Monday Memories: Parthenon replica transported festival-goers to Athens’ Acropolis
A touch of ancient Greece set the scene for Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church’s Greek-American Festival in 1984. The replica of the temple of Athena provided a backdrop for festival dancing and outdoor dining. In this Blade archive photo, four girls step high in front of the downsized temple, juxtaposed by the modern Toledo skyline in the background. From left were, Georgia Bekos, Christine Proestos, Renee Rouppas , and Sophia Bekos. The festival began as an indoor bazaar, but was expanded to an outdoor celebration highlighting Greek food and culture in the early 1970s. The church wrapped up its 52nd annual festival Sunday.
