Video: Former Spurs star breaks down in tears while announcing his retirement
Former Tottenham star Paulinho broke down in tears when announcing that he will be hanging up his boots after a long and distinguished career.
Paulinho’s Tottenham career
Paulinho arrived at Tottenham in the summer of 2013, with the midfielder being a part of the ‘Magnificent Seven’ who were signed with the proceeds from Gareth Bale’s sale to Real Madrid.
However, the Brazilian never quite managed to find his feet at White Hart Lane, departing the club in two years after making 45 appearances for the Lilywhites.
Paulinho left Spurs for the Chinese Super League club Guangzhou Evergrande and subsequently had spells with Barcelona and Al-Ahli, before returning to Corinthians back in 2022.
The athletic midfielder, who had a knack for arriving late in the box, was also capped 56 times by the Selecao, scoring 13 goals for his country.
Paulinho announces his retirement from football
On Sunday, the former Spurs man announced his retirement from the game he loves as he broke down in tears when discussing the things he was able to achieve in the game.
Paulinho said on his Instagram: “Thank you football. I was privileged to have been a multi-champion and to have won important things, as well as playing in two World Cups and playing for Barcelona.
“I left a great legacy. In my last game with Corinthians, with 45,000 Corinthians fans, I felt it would be my last game. There would be no better way to say goodbye.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Although things did not work out for Paulinho at Spurs, he was never quite as bad as many people made him out to be, with his career proving that he was more than a serviceable player.
We at Spurs Web would like to wish the 36-year-old a happy retirement.
