Annita appeared to be under the impression there was a commercial break but viewers could see the star scrolling on her phone.
The blunder – which lasted over a minute – before the anchor realised she was actually on TV.
As a true professional Annita styled it out, while the top stories began to play out.
However, eagle-eyed Beeb viewers at home spotted the gaff and flooded social media with their reactions.
One said: “The moment Annita started checking her phone was when I started panicking.”
A second wrote: “This is so funny.”
“Annita is such a pro, laughing at this,” said a third.
Meanwhile, last month BBC Breakfast hosts were left stunned as their behind-the-scenes makeup prep was accidentally aired.
The unexpected moment occurred during a preview segment just before the official start of the show.
The cameras switched to the BBC Breakfast studio for a sneak peek at the upcoming program, only to find Luxmy Gopal still getting her hair styled.
Co-presenter Charlie Stayt, who appeared slightly flustered as he straightened his clothes, welcomed viewers with a cheery “Good morning and welcome to BBC Breakfast with Luxmy Gopal and Charlie Stayt”.
