13 freebies for parents and new mums – from nappies to reward cash when you shop

RAISING a family is more expensive than ever, but there are loads of freebies that parents and new mums can take advantage of to ease the pressure.

Research from the charity Child Poverty Action Group found that in 2023, the cost of raising a child to age 18 was £166,000 for a couple.

Parents can get all kinds of freebies to help with costs

For lone parents, the expense is even higher, increasing to a whopping £220,000 for just one child.

Understandably, many parents are feeling the pinch – and the combination of a cost-of-living crisis and rising energy bills from October means that lots of households will struggle.

The good news is that there’s lots of help available, from free nappies and wipes to free dental treatment for new mums. We’ve rounded up all the best offers to help you slash your bills.

Free dental treatment and prescriptions

All pregnant women and mothers of children under one are entitled to free NHS prescriptions and dental care.

Your child is also free until they are at least 16 years old.

You need to make sure you are registered with a dentist who provides NHS treatment and accepts you and your children as NHS patients to get the free care.

If you are registered as a private patient or your dentist does not provide NHS treatment, then you’ll still have to pay.

You’ll need a Maternity Exemption Certificate (MatEx) from your midwife or GP.
