President of Union College to step down in 2025

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- Union College President Davis Harris will step down at the end of the academic year. Harris became the college's 19th president in July 2018 and shared the news early to ensure enough time to find a qualified candidate.

Harris shared a video with students, staff, and faculty, speaking of his passion for the college and his goal to ensure they thrive in the future. "Part of that requires understanding when it is the right time to pass the baton," Harris said.

Some of Harris' accomplishments include creating a strategic plan and new education programs, building a relationship with the city of Schenectady to construct a new arena for the college's NCAA Division I hockey programs, and guiding the school throughout the entire COVID-19 pandemic. Harris also set new fundraising records during his tenure, including two of the college's largest gifts totaling $91 million.

Union Board of Trustees Chair Julie Greifer Swidler said the executive search firm Isaacson Miller is facilitating the search for the next president. She added that the Union College community is grateful for Harris' leadership.

Swindler said his boundless energy and passion for students and the college's mission will leave a mark on the college's legacy. "I have every confidence we will be able to attract outstanding candidates for this position, in large part due to the strong foundation laid by David, his leadership team and the outstanding faculty and staff who carry out Union's mission every day," Swindler said.
