2024 Emmy Predictions: Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor

Judging by the last five years alone, Netflix has had remarkable success in the non-continuing series acting Emmy categories, most notably producing three lead male winners: Jharrel Jerome (“When They See Us”), Ewan McGregor (“Halston”), and Steven Yeun (“Beef”). Yet another such champion is generally expected to emerge in 2024, but it’s a bit unclear whether voters will end up favoring Richard Gadd (“Baby Reindeer”) or Andrew Scott (“Ripley”).

As was the case in 2022 and 2023, all of the current Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor nominees are new to the category. Joining the two Netflix contenders are Matt Bomer (“Fellow Travelers”), Jon Hamm (“Fargo”), and Tom Hollander (“Feud: Capote vs. The Swans”), the last of whom is, like Gadd, a complete Emmys first-timer.

In order to make sense of this race, let’s take a closer look at each nominee. Be sure to make your predictions in this and 24 other Primetime Emmy categories by September 15.

Matt Bomer as Hawkins Fuller (“Fellow Travelers”)

As a previous supporting nominee for the 2014 telefilm “The Normal Heart,” Bomer immediately follows Evan Peters (“Mare of Easttown”; “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story”) on the list of men who have contended for both possible movie/limited acting Emmys. In this adaptation of Thomas Mallon’s novel of the same name, he plays a closeted State Department official who begins a decades-long romance with a younger congressional staffer.

Richard Gadd as Donny Dunn (“Baby Reindeer”)

Gadd, who created this series on which he plays a version of himself, is also recognized for writing it and serving as one of its producers. Over the course of seven episodes, the Scottish comedian guides viewers through the tale of how, during a period of trauma-induced depression, he became entangled with a lonely, dangerously obsessive woman.

Jon Hamm as Roy Tillman (“Fargo”)

Hamm, whose sadistic Sheriff Tillman happens to be the only non-LGBTQ+ character in this lineup, is the fourth of his show’s leading men to achieve Emmy recognition, after season one duo Martin Freeman and Billy Bob Thornton and season three star McGregor. The former Best Drama Actor winner for “Mad Men” (2015) is simultaneously competing as a supporting cast member of “The Morning Show.”

Tom Hollander as Truman Capote (“Feud: Capote vs. The Swans”)

The second of this lineup’s two complete Emmys newcomers has a shot at following Robert Morse (“Tru,” 1993) as the second actor to merit this particular honor for playing Capote. Set primarily in the 1970s, this eight-part series focuses on the famed writer’s relationships with half a dozen New York socialites who he betrayed by including details of their lives in published excerpts of his unfinished novel, “Answered Prayers.”

Andrew Scott as Tom Ripley (“Ripley”)

Scott stands with Gadd as the only other actor in this bunch nominated for producing his series. The former drama guest contender (“Black Mirror,” 2020) stars on this adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s “The Talented Mr. Ripley” as a 1960s con artist who strikes a deal to bring a wealthy American businessman’s carefree son home from Italy.

So, who will win the 2024 Emmy for Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor? Throughout the entire initial phase of this Emmys season, Hamm was seen by Gold Derby users as the one to beat in this contest, but that immediately changed once he became an official nominee. Now that he holds a win backing rate of only 5%, it’s tough to imagine him prevailing here, but one mustn’t totally count him out given his potential to end up as this year’s token victor who started out with multiple acting bids.

Although Scott has emerged as a formidable candidate, it speaks volumes that Gadd’s general Gold Derby support rate is over 50% higher than his and that only our group of 17 industry experts view this as a close race. Barring a surprise on the part of Hamm, the “Baby Reindeer” star should garner plenty of votes based on the unique emotional resonance of his performance and the overall strength of his show.
