Opinion: Lucas Bergvall will explode for Spurs this season, and this is why
Tottenham Hotspur have a player who is potentially going to become one of the very best midfielders in the Premier League. Here’s why Lucas Bergvall is good enough to make a lasting impression straight away this season.
A generational talent
On deadline day in the January transfer window, Spurs stole the signing of Bergvall from under the noses of Barcelona. He cost them just £8.5m, sticking around in Sweden for a further six months before linking up with his new club this summer.
The 18-year-old has quickly established himself among Ange Postecoglou‘s first-team, taking the number 15 shirt, getting ample minutes in pre-season, and featuring in all three of the Lilywhites’ Premier League matches so far.
It is widely thought that Postecoglou will utilise this teenage talent this season, with GiveMeSport claiming the busy month of September will see Bergvall getting more minutes under his belt as Spurs kick off their pursuit of both the Carabao Cup and the Europa League.
That is a tantalising prospect for Spurs fans, and the young midfielder is certainly ready to take the football world by storm. I have a feeling that once Bergvall gets a proper chance in this team, he will not look back.
Moving to England from any other league is always tough, especially for young players, but Bergvall appears to have done it with ease. He’s already shown he can step into the Premier League with confidence, composure, and pure class on the ball.
He doesn’t seem fazed by the magnitude of where his career has taken him, and on the pitch, he displays all the attributes of a midfielder who can mix it at the very top of the game. Bergvall is not only full of creativity, vision, and a brilliant footballing mind, but he’s also not afraid to get stuck in and do the dirty work, too.
I genuinely don’t think this will be a case of him gradually building minutes and acclimatising to our league. I think Bergvall is already there, he’s ready to go; he knows he can be one of the best.
Others have done it
In the past, we’ve seen the likes of Sergio Aguero and Fernando Torres arrive in England and tear it up in their debut campaigns — Aguero scored 23 goals in his first season at Manchester City, Torres, 24 goals in his maiden campaign with Liverpool.
Of course, they were both older and had been playing in a much stronger league in Spain. Erling Haaland’s 36-goal debut season with City in 2022/23 was even more impressive, being slightly younger and coming from the slightly weaker Bundesliga.
The gulf between the Swedish league and the Premier League is vast, but the pressure on Bergvall will not be as high as the aforementioned players (as long as he doesn’t read this article). Bergvall will not be measured in goals, no one expects him to immediately be a success, he doesn’t come with a big price tag.
No, Bergvall has the luxury of still being a fairly unknown prospect in the wider game, and in his role in midfield, he can simply dictate play, pull the strings, and create chances. But, as we saw in Sweden, this is a teenager who is capable of incredible things — stunning goals, fantastic skill — and I don’t think the league is ready for when (not if) Bergvall truly kicks into gear.
