Chappell Roan’s Stalker Made Her Hire Security, Which Is ‘So Lame’
As she continues to deal with “predatory” fan behavior, Chappell Roan has hired security because of a stalker — which is “so lame,” she said in a new Rolling Stone cover story, following her social-media statements over some fans’ lack of boundaries with her. Since her rapid rise, Roan said fans have tracked her flight details to ambush her at the Seattle airport, and one man specifically attacked her for an autograph, to the point where she later “sobbed and was screaming.” And she said a fan even kissed her without consent in August. She finally posted her TikToks about fame after her dad’s phone number leaked. “I don’t want to be agoraphobic,” Roan told Rolling Stone. “That’s [how] most of my peers [feel]. Every fucking artist is on this page. Everyone is uncomfortable with fans. Some people just have more patience. I fucking don’t.”
Luckily, she does have a number of other musicians in her corner. Roan said she’s received support from artists including Charli XCX, Billie Eilish, Lady Gaga, Paramore’s Hayley Williams, and Miley Cyrus. Lorde gave her advice to not get noticed at airports, and Katy Perry told her not to read comments (which she knows all about). Mitski emailed her “to humbly welcome you to the shittiest exclusive club in the world.” She got coffees with boygenius’s Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus, commiserated with Phoebe Bridgers, and had dinner with the band Muna. Even fellow rising star Sabrina Carpenter compared notes with Roan.
“It was just good to know someone else feels that way,” Roan said. She did note that she’s heard from fewer male artists, but that list includes Troye Sivan, Orville Peck, Noah Kahan, and, of course, Elton John. “I am very protective of her,” said John, who had Roan and her producer Dan Nigro over for pizza during the summer.
“I’m not trying to name-drop,” Roan added. “I’m trying to tell you there are girls who are good people, who are helping other girls out. I’m name-dropping them because people just need to know that people are good people.”
