Former First Lady Melania Trump broke her silence on her husband Donald Trump’s assassination attempt and appeared to push a conspiracy theory around it.

Melania, wearing black and with a black background, addressed the July 13 shooting in a roughly 30-second video she posted on her X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday morning.

‘The attempt to end my husband’s life was a horrible, distressing experience,’ she said in the clip.

‘Now the silence around it feels heavy.’

Melania then cast doubt on the events leading up to the shooting at Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

‘I can’t help but wonder, why didn’t law enforcement officials arrest the shooter before the speech?’ she said.

‘There is definitely more to this story, and we need to uncover the truth.’

It ends with an image promoting her forthcoming memoir titled, Melania.

Her words seemed to fall in line with some conspiracy theories that emerged following the shooting, many of them around how gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks managed to go unnoticed by Secret Service agents and fire a bullet that grazed Trump’s ear.

Trump has blamed President Joe Biden and his 2024 opponent Kamala Harris, accusing them of making it hard for the Secret Service to have sufficient staffing to adequately protect him. That theory and others that have emerged are without evidence.

Melania shared the video hours before the first presidential debate between Trump and Vice President Harris.

The former first lady had been largely absent from the public eye while her husband hit the campaign trail.

But on Sunday, with less than two months remaining until the November election, Melania finally put out a clear message supporting him. It was also a video posted to her X account promoting her memoir, and had only words including: ‘It has become increasingly apparent that there are significant challenges to free speech, as demonstrated by the efforts to silence my husband.’

That clip and Tuesday’s hint that Melania’s memoir will at least in part be aimed at showing support for her husband.

Tuesday’s video was the first time that Melania has spoken about the assassination attempt. In late July, Trump in a sit-down interview with Fox News said that his wife ‘can’t really even talk about’ the shooting, ‘which is OK because that means she likes me, or she loves me’.
