England, on the other hand, have been involved in a three-match Test series against Sri Lanka which they won 2-1 in spite of losing the third Test at the Oval this week. The home side have handed debuts to two youngsters – Jacob Bethell, who is 20, and Jordan Cox, who is 23 – apart from 30-year-old Jamie Overton who is also set to play his first T20I match on Wednesday.
With all-rounder Moeen Ali announcing his retirement, it is good opportunity for England head coach Brendon McCullum to test the waters under the leadership of Kolkata Knight Riders wicketkeeper Phil Salt, who is captaining the side in the absence of injured Jos Buttler.
Australia, on the other hand, will be boosted by the return of pace spearhead Josh Hazlewood but will miss the services of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Glenn Maxwell in this series. “We’ve certainly got guys that are missing this tour and some young guys that are getting opportunity, but I don’t necessarily see this as a transitional period for us,” Marsh told reporters in Southampton on the eve of the series.
