'Stunning': Republican floored that Trump aligned himself with J6 rioters over officers

Republican Voters Against Trump president and longtime GOP pollster Sarah Longwell confessed that a key moment in the Tuesday debate was "stunning."

Speaking with MSNBC's Nicolle Wallace on Wednesday, Longwell said that what struck her the most was the question about the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.

"Listening to him put himself on the side of the insurrectionist and the police officers on the other side, was stunning," she told Wallace.

"However, the thing that I heard that Kamala [Harris] was doing throughout the debate, that I found so encouraging, was she was actively reaching out to the center," Longwell explained. "She was actively reaching out to the voters who may have voted for Trump and who decided they could not support him after Jan. 6."

She explained that Republican Voters Against Trump reaches out to former Trump voters, both in focus groups and polls, and tracks their standing and where the ex-president was losing their support. Jan. 6 was a breaking point for many of them, she noted.

Harris extended an olive branch to ensure that Republicans knew they were welcomed into the broad coalition of both parties coming together around her candidacy, she added.
