NYC Ferry ridership grows as expansion plans are discussed

NEW YORK (PIX11) -- People take their commutes around New York seriously. Riders are always looking for a better option.

A New York City Council hearing held this week discussed the future of the ferry.

Ridership on NYC Ferry has grown about 8% this year, according to the New York City Economic Development Corporation. The agency operates the service in the city and participated in the hearing.

When the boats first hit the water seven years ago, they changed the ride for people near the docks.

Service has expanded to include Astoria, Bay Ridge, East 90th Street in Manhattan, and the Soundview neighborhood in the Bronx.

While some may be sightseeing, regular commuters will gladly point out the benefits of their rides.

"From Brooklyn to 34th Street and I get in my steps. It works out for me," said Shelia.

Wall Street/Pier 11 landing is the busiest spot, followed by Manhattan's East 34th Street and Dumbo in Brooklyn.

"It's a way to start the morning and less rush hour than the subway," said Paola.

NYC Ferry is focusing on the finances. The cost of a single ride, which many tourists choose, is $4.50.

The 10-trip ticket is in line with the subway fare at $29.

“NYC Ferry thanks the New York City Council for an in-depth hearing, which showed that NYC Ferry continues to set ridership records while substantially decreasing the per passenger subsidy, all while delivering an amazing rider experience for New Yorkers," said New York City Economic Development Corporation spokesperson Adrien Lesser.

Bay Ridge to Wall Street express service launched March 2023.

New York City Council member Justin Brannan represents the area, and he calls the 20-minute ride a game changer.

"There needs to be borough equity. We get more riders on the ferry if we get them to the ferry. The good news is ridership is up and the subsidy is down," Brannan said.

Brannan's district includes Coney Island, which has been calling for ferry service.

Estimates to build a dock have been $250 million. Brannan finds the number unbelievable.

Canarsie, Willets Point, Staten Island, LaGuardia Airport, and Far Rockaway have also been discussed as possible areas to study.

The New York City Economic Development Corporation said the focus is continuing to lower the taxpayer subsidy and provide quality service.

The high subsidy and waterfront service to new developments have been criticisms.

The City Council has suggested the idea of shuttle buses to transport people to the ferries from the surrounding areas.
