Shailene Woodley Has a Soft Spot for Melania Trump

In July, Melania Trump shared a rare statement in the wake of Donald Trump getting shot. In it, she wrote, “Let us not forget that differing opinions, policy, and political games are inferior to love. Our personal, structural, and life commitment — until death — is at serious risk. Political concepts are simple when compared to us, human beings.” While some speculated that the First Lady’s uncharacteristically long and somewhat convoluted statement was the product of AI, Shailene Woodley apparently found her words “so beautiful.” The actress shared Melania’s post to her Instagram Story, and now she’s confused why everyone got so mad at her.

“I only posted the first page of it, because the second page was more political,” Woodley told Bustle in an interview. “The first page was very much like, ‘Look, underneath the political mask is a man, a grandpa, who comes home to his children, his grandchildren, and plays music. The man underneath that mask is my husband.’” (In case you have not committed it to memory, the majority of Melania’s statement was on the first page.)

Woodley called the letter a “beautiful message of human compassion” and was shocked when people were upset by what they perceived to be her supporting the Trumps. “I was like, ‘Oh my God, that is now this? Hundreds of articles because I posted about a woman saying she’s grateful her husband is alive? Really?’”

Hard to tell if Woodley is playing dumb or if she really was naïve to how her sharing the post would go over. Maybe she and Brittany Mahomes can start a little support group for women who have been condemned for MAGA-adjacent social-media behavior.
