Malaysian police resuce 400 minors from Islamic Charity over abuse allegations

Malaysian police reported that over 400 children and teenagers, victims of sexual abuse, were rescued on Wednesday from the facilities of a charity operated by an Islamic commercial organization.

The police also announced the arrest of 171 individuals, including religious teachers associated with the children. The arrests were part of a coordinated operation across 20 buildings in two Malaysian cities.

Inspector General of Malaysian Police, Razarudin Hussein, stated that the operation took place on Wednesday, September 11. Among the rescued children were 201 boys and 201 girls, ranging in age from one to 17 years old.

These children were residing in charity facilities controlled by the Global Services and Trade Organization of Ikhwan, a Malaysian organization involved in various industries including shops and laundries across Indonesia, Singapore, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, France, Australia, and Thailand.

According to Reuters, the organization is linked to the al-Qalam Islamic sect, which has been banned in Malaysia since 1994. The Global Services and Trade Organization of Ikhwan has confirmed its connection to the sect.

Malaysian police revealed that the rescued children were the offspring of the organization’s employees and were placed in the facilities shortly after birth. The police acted on reports of abuse and sexual exploitation in these facilities received earlier this month.

Initial investigations indicate that the children were first sexually abused by their caretakers and then coerced into abusing other children in the facilities. The police also reported that some children who disobeyed their caretakers were burned with hot spoons on their backs and arms.

The troubling revelations about Ikhwan’s Global Services and Trade Organization highlight serious ethical and legal concerns. The organization’s use of children for exploitation, combined with its controversial practices, underscores the need for continued scrutiny and reform.
