When does the iPhone 16 go on sale?
The iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max handsets were announced at Apple’s iPhone event on September 9.

- Pre-orders on Apple’s website will start at 5 a.m. PDT, at 8 a.m. EDT on Friday, September 13.
- The phones will go on sale on Friday, September 20.

You can purchase directly from Apple with activation on a carrier to get special carrier deals, though you may have more options if you buy from one of the carriers below.
In the U.S., Apple is once again partnering with carriers to offer discounts on the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus. You get a $30 discount if you buy a phone activated on AT&T, Verizon, or T-Mobile. That’s why Apple lists the price of the iPhone 16 as $799 and the iPhone 16 Plus as $899—that’s the price with the carrier-activated discount applied.
Best Unlocked iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro and 16 Max deals
Buying direct from Apple is one of the few ways to buy an unlocked, SIM-free iPhone 16 or iPhone 16 Plus, and it’s the go-to place to join the iPhone Upgrade Program which from $39.50 a month will get you a new iPhone every year including AppleCare+ coverage.

You’ll always pay full price for a new iPhone at the Apple Store (no carrier discounts here), but it’s a direct and simple way to get an iPhone, and in some cases the only place to buy one without activating it on a mobile network.
