Local live music scene thriving

September marks the beginning of a new season, not just the academic year but also a new series of cultural happenings. Expect more concerts, gigs, recitals and shows in the coming weeks with several happening as soon as this weekend.

Blues, indie and alternative music will sound at the Poe Bar in Limassol this Saturday as local musician Nikolis Christodoulou takes the floor with his guitar. The set is scheduled to begin at 8.30pm and has free entry. In a more jazzy mood is a Nicosia performance by Marios Toumbas and the Ioannis Vafeas Trio on the same evening.

Stepping onto the Sarah’s Jazz Club stage, long-time friends, pianist Marios Toumbas and drummer Ioannis Vafeas will join forces again to remember their Berklee days in Boston. Their performance follows a recent show at the 15th Tinos Jazz Festival in Greece, where they performed music from Vafeas’ two albums as well as some original arrangements of jazz standards and original compositions. On Saturday they will be joined by bassist Greg Makamian, also an old friend and colleague who just returned to Cyprus from Canada.

On Sunday evening, Technopolis 20 in Paphos will present the Pulsar Band, an ensemble that plays a blend of ethnic, folk and rock genres. The four musicians (Maria Avraam, Konstantinos Charilaou, Christos Politis and Stavros Savva) will use traditional instruments mixing them with electronic sounds and three-dimensional sound effects. Through their original compositions, which capture a strong and distinctive character in each piece, the band creates a sonic mosaic that guides the listener into new auditory experiences. They will also present some covers of well-known traditional songs in their own unique style.

Coming soon to shake up Limassol’s nightlife scene is the Blaze of Glory event, a premier tribute show in the UK to the legendary Bon Jovi. The Blaze of Glory band will entertain Limassol audiences on Tuesday at Kiklos Mousiki bringing to life electrifying performances of hits such as Livin’ on a Prayer, You Give Love a Bad Name and Wanted Dead or Alive, putting on a fiery rock music experience.
