Marla Mindelle Explains How Margot Robbie Became Involved with 'The Big Gay Jamboree' Musical

Margot Robbie is co-producing a stage musical for the first time and the show’s star and creator Marla Mindelle is explaining how the collaboration happened!

The acclaimed actress and writer, who previously created the hit show Titanique, participated in a press day for her new musical The Big Gay Jamboree on Tuesday (September 12) at the Orpheum Theatre in New York City.

Marla was joined at the event by co-stars Alex Moffat, Constantine Rousouli, Paris Nix, and Natalie Walker, as well as director and choreographer Connor Gallagher, and co-writers Jonathan Parks-Ramage and Philip Drennen.

The Big Gay Jamboree centers on Stacey (Mindelle), who after blacking out from 18 Jägerbombs, wakes up hungover in the most terrifying place of all: an Off-Broadway musical. With no memory of how she got there, Stacey is forced to put her BFA in theater to use, belt her face off, and figure out how the hell she’s gonna escape this 1940′s golden age musical…while a live audience watches.

So, how did Margot become involved?

“10 years ago, I left musical theatre. I wanted absolutely nothing to do with it. And I was like, ‘I’m going to go to L.A. and become a writer,’ but I failed miserably,” Marla said in a new video.

She continued, “But I did sell one movie, The Big Gay Jamboree, and who was attached to produce? Margot Robbie. And I’m proud to say the whole thing fell apart. But at the time I was also writing something called Titanique. Turns out, Titanique becomes a wild success. I’m performing as Celine one day and who is in the audience, but Margot Robbie. And then I get an email in my inbox six months later and sure enough it was actual Margot Robbie.”

Marla said the email said, “Hi Marla, It’s Margot Robbie. Titanique was the greatest thing I’ve ever seen. I’ve told a million people about it. What else are you working on?”

Marla continued, “I said, ‘Hey, I’m working on our movie from L.A. Do you want to like, come on board?’ And she was like, ‘Absolutely! When do you want to do it?’ And I was like, ‘Tomorrow, I don’t have much time left in this business.’ And a year later, here we are!”
