Giovani Lo Celso returns to Real Betis

Lo Celso sealed a return to Betis on transfer deadline day, five years on from leaving the La Liga club to join Tottenham in 2019.

The BBC claim that Spurs earned around £8.4m plus add-ons from the sale, while a first option to buy Johnny Cardoso has also been widely reported.

The midfielder’s spell at the North London club proved to be a major disappointment, with the 28-year-old never appearing quite at home in the Premier League.

It did not come as much of a surprise when he eventually sealed a return to Betis, and ABC Sevilla now report that the player played a key part in the transfer.

It is explained that it was only due to the Argentine’s efforts that Manuel Pellegrini’s men were able to win the race for him, having started working on the deal a month before the deadline.

Lo Celso has a huge release clause

Interestingly, the report claims that Lo Celso’s contract at Betis contains a huge release clause worth somewhere between €60m and €100m (£50.7m-£84.5m).

The Spanish side have included such a big clause to ensure that a Saudi Pro League does not swoop for the former Tottenham man within the next year or two.

Lo Celso’s ability was never in doubt but he never seemed to quite have the appetite to fight for a place at Spurs and always seemed to pick up injuries at just the wrong time.

The midfielder would be hoping to get his career back on track now that he is back in familiar surroundings.
