Summer gun violence in Albany, Schenectady, Troy

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- When the weather get warmer, gun violence sometimes increases in cities around New York. In the Capital Region, a majority of this violence happens in Albany, Schenectady, and Troy.

Each month, the Division of Criminal Justice Services releases its Gun Involved Violence Elimination (GIVE) initiative report. The Albany, Schenectady, and Troy Police Departments are all a part of the program.

The GIVE program provides funding to police departments, district attorney’s offices, probation departments, and sheriff’s offices in 21 counties outside of New York City. The funding goes toward personnel, overtime, technology, equipment, and training to help prevent shootings and gun-related crimes.

Throughout New York, gun violence is down so far this year by 28% for shooting incidents and 24% for people shot. This data is based only on the police departments that participate in the GIVE program.

Agencies in the program are required to report shooting incidents with injuries, the number of people shot, and the number of people killed by gun violence to the Division of Criminal Justice Services. Here are those numbers for Albany, Schenectady, and Troy for June, July, and August of 2024 compared to that same timeframe in 2023.
