Ellenville man pleads not responsible by reason of insanity
KINGSTON, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- An Ellenville man accused of the attempted murder of his mother has pleaded not responsible by reason of mental disease or defect, the Ulster County District Attorney's Office announced Thursday. Jordan Cutler, 36, was indicted on the charges of attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault and first-degree strangulation, all felonies.
According to the district attorney's office, the indictment stemmed from a domestic dispute between Cutler and his mother. The indictment stated Cutler choked his mother and then cut across her neck with a kitchen knife, following a visit from Mobile Mental Health.
When Ellenville Police responded to the scene, the defendant allegedly stated, "I tried to kill my mother." On Wednesday, the court hearing was adjourned for psychiatric evaluations of Cutler could be completed.
A hearing to determine if Culter suffers from a dangerous mental illness is scheduled for Oct. 10. If he is determined to be a danger to himself or others, he must be committed to a secure psychiatric facility.
