One of the British youngsters, aged 20, suffered serious head injuries and was stabilised at the scene before being transferred to the Spanish holiday island’s Mateu Orfila Hospital.

He is being treated intensive care unit but is understood to be in stable condition.

A 24-year-old described as his brother was also seriously hurt, suffering multiple injuries including a broken leg.

Their dad, 46, and the taxi driver were also hurt but not seriously.

The Argentinian woman who died aged 72 was a front-seat passenger in a Kia hire car which collided with the taxi.

Her husband, 64, was driving and is in serious condition in Mateu Orfila Hospital with chest injuries.

The tragedy happened this morning just after 9.30am near the inland town of Ferreries, one of the most picturesque on the island, on the road between Mahon and Ciutadella.

Photos from the scene showed the fronts of both vehicles involved in the crash badly damaged with their windscreens smashed and bits of both cars scattered over the road.

An investigation into the accident has been launched but local reports are pointing to the hire car careering onto the wrong side of the road as it came down a hill where the smash occurred.

The injured Brits are all understood to have been on holiday in Menorca.

It was not immediately clear this afternoon where they had been heading to in the taxi.
