‘No reason why we can’t’ – Postecoglou wants to challenge for the title this year

The rivalry between Tottenham and Arsenal has become all the more heated in the last couple of years, with the Gunners asserting their dominance in the North London derby and the Premier League in general. Ange Postecoglou has been discussing the two teams and why Arsenal are so impressive.

Arsenal are a confident team

In the last two seasons, Arsenal have pushed Manchester City for the Premier League title, and have dropped just two points from the last four fixtures against Spurs.

Mikel Arteta’s side travel to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday afternoon for the first North London derby of the season, and both sides will be eager to set a marker for what they hope to achieve this year.

However, it will not be an easy game for Tottenham, something Postecoglou is acutely aware of. Speaking to the press today (via Football.London), he discussed why the Gunners are so hard to beat.

“Approach, mentality. The last two years they’ve had a real relentlessness about them,” he said. “They have this confidence in themselves that they can challenge over the course of the season. They’re going to be a tough nut to crack, but it’s a great opportunity for us.”

Postecoglou isn’t interested in comparisons

Many have cited the progress Arteta has made at Arsenal as a potential blueprint for where Tottenham are headed, but Postecoglou was not particularly keen to draw those comparisons between the two teams.

He added: “Different clubs, different environments. I’ve said before there’s obviously a way to build a team and a club, going in a certain direction. It’s about finding the right people for the right positions.”

And, when asked if Tottenham want to push Arsenal and be in the conversation for the league title this year, the Spurs boss insisted it is not important who they battle for the top honours, as long as they are challenging.

“Not specifically Arsenal – we want to be a club that challenges everyone,” Postecoglou continued. “That’s what we want to become. I think we’re in a good place to push on from last year. There’s no reason why we can’t [challenge] this year.”

Arsenal are so difficult to play against, but we have to get the better of them this weekend, and we really do have a great chance. If we can dominate the game we have been lately, and finish our chances, we’ve got them.
