'God is mocked!' Evangelical leader condemns Trump's latest campaign gambit

Evangelical Christian leader Russell Moore put his foot down on Friday in the wake of threats being leveled against Haitian immigrants that were inspired by the rhetoric of former President Donald Trump and Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH).

Shortly after it was revealed that officials in Springfield, Ohio were forced to evacuate two elementary schools due to violent threats from apparent Trump supporters, Moore took to Twitter to condemn the kind of campaign tactic as antithetical to the teachings of Jesus Christ.

"The cruelty to and lying about Haitian immigrant families is satanic to the core," he wrote. "Children are terrified and God is mocked. The time for repentance is now."

Springfield came into the spotlight earlier this week after Trump leveled false allegations at his presidential debate with Vice President Kamala Harris that Haitian immigrants in the community were abducting and eating local residents' pets.

Although local police and city officials say they have heard no credible reports of such things happening, Trump and Vance have doubled down on the false claims in the days since the debate.

On Thursday, Springfield's city hall had to be evacuated due to a bomb threat inspired by the anti-Haitian rhetoric, which was followed on Friday by threats targeting schools.
