Man who left A&E and crashed car died from heart attack

The cause of death of 43-year-old Alkis Michael, who died early on Sunday morning while driving away from the Limassol general hospital where he reported chest pain, has been preliminarily identified as a heart attack, pending final histopathological results.

According to a statement released by the police on Monday, the post-mortem revealed signs of a “recent myocardial infarction on the basis of coronary artery disease”.

Michail crashed into a parked vehicle at around 5:30am in the Ayia Fylaxeos area. He had gone to the hospital in the early hours of the morning.

For reasons not yet clear, he drove away after registering and while driving lost control of the vehicle. He drove onto the pavement and crashed into a vehicle parked outside a store. Police speculate he may have been driving to a private clinic.

Biological samples have been taken from the deceased for further testing to confirm the exact cause of death. The 43-year-old was found dead in his vehicle.

State health services (Okypy) spokesman Charalambos Charilaou said an investigation had been ordered into the matter.

Michail left the waiting area by himself without informing anyone and without signing paperwork saying he was leaving of his own free will, according to Charilaou.
