'The mask is off': Ex-senator calls out Vance over his 'really telling phrase'
A former U.S. Senator is calling out Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) over his weekend comment that he "creates stories" to illustrate his point, even if they aren't true.
Speaking on Nicolle Wallace's "Deadline: White House," Claire McCaskill, a Missouri Democrat, said that Vance is a wordsmith and his book makes it clear. So, when he alleged they "create stories" like what happened in Springfield, Ohio, it says a lot.
Wallace noted that while stories of "eating Labradoodles" are false, the consequences are not. Children now can't go to school.

"That is real," she said.
"The chaos loop is so well worn and the exhaustion is so complete. And the fear — you don't have to be a Haitian American. Every parent in Springfield, Ohio, is scared to send their baby to school! Because when will it stop being a target?"
McCaskill said she wished she knew how to make it stop or when it would stop but that political violence has become a reality before Trump was shot in Pennsylvania.
She noted that it happened in Charlottesville and in states where Asian Americans were attacked during COVID. It also happened, when Nazis hung banners on overpasses attacking Jews. Then she mentioned Jan. 6, when it happened again.
"This is impacting their lives, and you know what? They don't have a protective detail," said McCaskill comparing Trump to the children in Springfield. "Throwing acid on cars, threatening people, doing all of that in Springfield, Ohio."
She also pointed out that Ohio officials who have begged Trump and Vance to stop are Republicans.
"His language about creating stories — it was precise," McCaskill said, quoting Vance's words. "'If I have to create stories.' He knows he can get stories to kick off on social media, especially in that dark corner where their base hangs out. And he's creating other stories. They're creating stories that most of the immigrants in this country are raping and murdering."
McCaskill said Trump, Vance, and their efforts are behind such stories — and they're doing it "every day."
"The mask is off," she closed. "But that was a really telling phrase. He's a candidate for vice president. He knows every word will be dissected. And he is very good with words."
