Powerhouse at Spier Falls dam destroyed, company says

MOREAU, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Brookfield Renewable, the owner of the hydroelectric facility at the Spier Falls dam, has released its first public statement so far. The company told NEWS10 that the powerhouse was destroyed in the fire on Saturday.

"Unfortunately, the powerhouse at the Spier Falls hydropower facility has been lost to the fire," said Brookfield Renewable. "At this time, we would like to convey to the public that we have no dam safety concerns. We would like to express our gratitude to all the first responders who helped subdue the fire and are certainly thankful that nobody was hurt."

The fire broke out on September 14 around 6 p.m. with fire crews working into the night to douse the blaze. According to a Moreau town official, most of the power generated from the hydro facility went to Global Foundries and Finch Pruyn.

“National Grid is working with first responders and Brookfield Renewable after this weekend’s fire,” said National Grid. “While no National Grid customers were impacted by the fire’s damage, our crews are working to assess and mitigate any potential impacts to our energy delivery system in the area."

A cause for the fire has not been released yet. The Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services said state fire investigators are looking into the cause.
