Russian envoy meets Amir Khan, invites him to Moscow talks

Dmitry Zhirnov, the Russian ambassador in Kabul, met with Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Taliban’s acting foreign minister.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced today, Wednesday, September 18th, that the Russian ambassador invited Amir Khan Muttaqi to participate in the upcoming Moscow Consultative Format meeting on Afghanistan.

In this meeting, Dmitry Zhirnov stated, “Relations with Afghanistan are important to Russia, and the Afghan delegation is invited to attend all regional and international meetings hosted by Moscow.

This comes amid Russia’s security concerns and the presence of extremist groups in Afghanistan, prompting Russia to maintain close relations with the Taliban despite not officially recognizing the Taliban regime.

The invitation to the Moscow Consultative Format meeting highlights the continuing diplomatic engagement between Russia and Afghanistan. Such meetings offer a platform for dialogue on regional and international concerns, which can contribute to strengthening bilateral relations.
