Pakistan reports 3 new Polio Cases, tally rises to 21 this year
Pakistani media reported on Saturday, September 21 that three new cases of polio have been identified in the country.
The new cases were recorded in Sindh, Balochistan, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces. With these three cases, the total number of polio cases in Pakistan has risen to 21.
Health officials in Pakistan have stated that 14 cases have been identified in Balochistan, four in Sindh, one in Punjab, one in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and one in Islamabad so far this year.
Polio is an infectious disease that primarily affects children under the age of five. According to doctors, the virus attacks the nervous system, causing paralysis and even death in children.
Afghanistan and Pakistan remain the only two countries in the world where the polio virus has not yet been eradicated.
The resurgence of polio cases in Pakistan highlights the ongoing challenges in global health efforts to eradicate the disease. Despite significant progress in previous years, the persistence of the virus in certain regions demands enhanced vaccination campaigns and public health initiatives.
Collaborative international efforts, especially between Afghanistan and Pakistan, are essential to eradicate polio entirely. Ensuring vaccine accessibility and addressing misinformation are critical steps towards a polio-free future.
