Who is the mystery fourth Spurs captain Ange Postecoglou speaks of? – opinion
Speaking to the press after the win over Brentford at the weekend, Ange Postecoglou mentioned that three of his four captains were involved in Tottenham’s third goal. But who is that fourth captain?
Who are Tottenham’s captains?
Until now, we have known that Heung-min Son is the club’s primary captain, with Cristian Romero and James Maddison acting as vice-captains.
All three were involved in the third goal against Brentford, but Postecoglou told the BBC that “three of our four captains” played a part in the goal.
Here’s a look at four candidates who we think he could have been talking about.
Ben Davies is an experienced head
As the club’s longest-serving player, it would make sense to give Ben Davies a certain degree of responsibility from time to time.
The Welshman is an experienced player, and is always reliable whenever he is called upon. It says a lot that he was captain of the team in the recent Carabao Cup clash with Coventry City.
But, Davies doesn’t really play regularly enough to be regarded as a viable option for Tottenham‘s captaincy on any kind of consistent basis.
Can Yves Bissouma be trusted?
Yves Bissouma is one of the more senior players in a very young Spurs squad, and on his best day, he’s the kind of mature and composed leader you’d want in the middle of the park.
However, his recent off-field antics — namely inhaling laughing gas and sharing the video evidence on social media — have tarnished his reputation a little. Bissouma has worked hard to earn back Postecoglou’s trust, but he’s not quite there yet.
There’s also the fact that Bissouma was involved in that goal against Brentford, so he surely cannot be the mystery fourth captain Postecoglou was referring to.
Guglielmo Vicario must be the man
The likelihood is that Postecoglou was talking about Guglielmo Vicario. The Italian was added to the leadership group established by the Spurs boss last season, and at 27-years-old, he’s also one of the more senior players at the club.
As the number one goalkeeper, Vicario will play the vast majority of games for Spurs this season, which also helps his cause in being considered one of the options for captaincy.
Of all the players Postecoglou could have been referring to, our pick would be Vicario.
Rodrigo Bentancur has captained the team before
There is one other option: Rodrigo Bentancur. The Uruguayan is experienced, an older member of the squad, and he actually captained the side last season in the FA Cup third-round game against Burnley.
However, it is extremely unlikely Bentancur would be considered for captaincy. His injury record, twinned with his recent issues off the field — the bottle-throwing incident on international duty and the racist remarks regarding Heung-min Son — would make him an unreliable choice indeed.
