Assault rifles, firearms recovered in NYC buyback event
JAMAICA, Queens (PIX11) -- Five assault weapons and 19 semi-automatic pistols were among guns collected in a buyback event held in Jamaica on Saturday, Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced Monday.
76 guns were exchanged for bank cards and Food Bazaar gift cards, no questions asked.
"Gun buybacks are an incredibly effective way to get firearms off our streets. Every weapon recovered in a potential tragedy averted," said DA Katz.
The buyback event was held at the First Presbyterian Church. To date, 543 firearms have been recovered during buyback events, according to Katz.
Other firearms recovered include 37 revolvers, five rifles, six shotguns, and four additional weapons.
