Brandon Sproat Wins Eastern League Pitcher of the Year
One of the best pitcher prospects in baseball has earned some well-deserved hardware.
On Tuesday morning, Brandon Sproat was named the Double-A Eastern League Pitcher of the Year. He posted a 2.45 ERA and a 77 strikeout-to-15-walk ratio for Binghamton over 62 1/3 innings. He also held opposing batters to a .181 batting average. In addition to the award, Sproat was named an Eastern League All-Star this season.
Sproat, 24, is the first Binghamton pitcher to win the award since right-hander Corey Oswalt in 2017. Sproat was ranked as our No. 1 prospect in the Mets system in our most recent update, and MLB Pipeline had him as the No. 37 overall prospect in baseball in their update.
During a season in which he was also named the Mets’ minor league pitcher of the year, the former Florida Gator took the next leap in his development.
His entire arsenal –including a fastball that can touch 100 mph–was effective for the most part, and he honed his control on an overall level. Combined with an increase in consistent velocity, and Sproat blossomed into a premier prospect for the Mets in 2024.
In only his first season of pro ball, Sproat had a 3.40 ERA and an impressive 131 strikeouts over 116 1/3 innings between High-A Brooklyn and Binghamton and finishing the season in Triple-A Syracuse. The Mets drafted Sproat in the second round of the 2023 draft.
Sproat should be knocking on the doors of the major leagues sooner rather than later. He offers a very effective pitch mix and velocity that should be able to get hitters out consistently. And while his control is not perfect yet, some more refinement during the offseason and spring training should help him hit the ground running.
The University of Florida product was a great asset to the Mets’ minor league system this season and earned hardware for his contributions. If Sporat continues on a similar path in 2025, he should be able to do the same for the big league club.
