Westerville library proposes levy increase

WESTERVILLE, Ohio (WCMH) -- The Westerville Public Library is asking the community to vote this November for an increase on an operating levy.

Currently, residents each pay about $44 per year for the library's services. Issue 43 is asking the community for additional funding to support the library. The staff hopes voters like Karen Kish will see why this levy is so important.

“We're the only library in the system that's not part of the Columbus system,” Kish said. “So it is really expensive if we join the Columbus system. So, to keep it going, I think they're going to need the levy.”

This is the first time the library has asked for a levy increase in 13 years. Executive Director Erin Francoeur notes that over the years, costs have risen but the library system’s revenue has not increased at the same rate.

“It's a reasonable amount,” Francoeur said. “We looked at smaller amounts but want to make sure that we don't have to be back on the ballot again real soon, so looking to be able to make this last as long as our previous one did, if not longer.”

The levy is asking for an additional 0.75 mill increase, a $26 increase for every $100,000 in home value. Overall, homeowners would pay about $70 per $100,000 of property value to fund the library.

Westerville resident Rob Ryder understands how the cost might be a lot to ask from certain people.

“When a levy such as the one for the library comes up, many individuals have to look at their immediate needs and I respect that,” Ryder said. “Many Ohioans and many individuals living in Westerville and the greater Columbus area are having difficult times right now putting food on the table is crucial.”

Staff members believe that the library is essential as it hosts events and programs but also provides access to information and a greater sense of purpose.

“All libraries serve as kind of a cornerstone of their community,” Francoeur said. “They're a place where everyone is welcome, and everyone can feel included and be part of the community.”
