Heung-min Son reveals Bentancur’s reaction to racial incident – ‘He was almost crying’

Son has a lot of love for Bentancur

During an international break earlier this year, Bentancur took part in a media interview in his native Uruguay, and made an ill-advised joke about Heung-min Son and his South Korean compatriots all looking alike.

The comment caused upset among the footballing community, and while the club dealt with the matter internally, the FA has since charged Bentancur for his conduct and he could face a suspension of up to 12 weeks (ESPN).

Discussing this topic with the press today (via Football.London), Son revealed how he and Bentancur both reacted to the situation at the time, and what his feelings on the matter are now.

He said: “I love Rodrigo. I love him. We’ve had a lot of good memories. He knew and he apologised straight afterwards. I was on holiday and didn’t even know what happened. He sent me a long text and you could tell it was from his heart.

“He then saw me at training and he was almost crying. He felt really sorry. We’re all human and we make mistakes. I love Rodrigo and we move on together as a brother. We just have to wait for the FA’s process and that’s all I can say.”

Postecoglou has his say on the matter

Son has been very clear in the past that he received and accepted Bentancur’s apology, and even shared a message of support on social media at the time.

Spurs boss, Ange Postecoglou has also discussed the situation previously, telling Football.London that Bentancur was well aware of the ‘ramifications’ of his actions and that they would wait for the FA’s decision.

A decision will be made soon

Bentancur had until September 19 to respond to the alleged breach of Rule E3, and we should soon find out the result of his charge.

If he were to be banned for a maximum of 12 weeks, he would likely miss the majority of the league phase of the Europa League, any subsequent Carabao Cup games Spurs make it to, and roughly 10 Premier League matches, too.
