Domino’s garlic and herb dip going for £9,999 on eBay after allergy recall

Would you rather buy this dip, a car, stocks or farmland for just shy of ten grande? (Picture: Domino’s/eBay)

If you’ve ordered a Domino’s pizza recently and forgot to open the dip, you basically have your retirement sorted.

Last week, the pizza restaurant chain withdrew its Garlic & Herb and Honey & Mustard dips over allergy concerns.

Traces of peanuts were found in both ‘making them a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy’, food safety officials said.

The recall included the 100g and 25g size garlic and herb dip pots and the 25g honey and mustard dip.

Domino’s immediately stopped selling the pots on September 17, emailing customers to throw any leftover dips away and avoid eating them.

But the thing is, that’s easier said than done. Britons love garlic and herb dip – seriously. One Domino’s survey found that people consumed enough Garlic & Herb Dip to fill 17 Olympic-size swimming pools in 2023.

While it does seem you can order the dip on the Domino’s website now, some people, hungrier for money than pizza clearly, are flogging nearly-expired garlic and herb dip pots on eBay.

One, which goes off in November, is apparently the ‘last ONE!!!’, according to the seller and is going for £9,9990 – with PayPal credit, it’ll set you back £471.60 per month for 24 months.

While they don’t say what size the dip is, just a reminder that a 25g one at Domino’s is £0.69.

One seller really, really wants potential buyers to know the dip pot is a ‘a rare find for any sauce lover’ (Picture: eBay)
The starting bid of £1 is still 39p more than the actual retail price (Picture: eBay

Others are hoping to get slightly less. From an ‘unopened and registered’ pot for £499 and a ‘VERY RARE’ pot with a starting bid of a penny.

Three ‘new and unopened (very rare)’ garlic and herb pots are up for grabs in another listing, which has a starting bid of £30. (No one has yet to make a bid.)

A 100g pot is being sold by someone in Leatherhead for £50, with bids starting at £1. ‘Unopened and refrigerated,’ they stress. This is a big selling point.

‘This Dominos Garlic and Herb Dip is a rare find for any sauce lover. With its discontinued status, it’s a must-have for collectors and fans alike,’ the eBay seller said.

‘The dip is perfect for adding flavour to any dish, whether it’s a pizza or a sandwich. The pantry is the ideal food aisle for this dip, and it’s sure to be a hit with anyone who loves other sauces.

‘It’s a great addition to any condiment collection and is perfect for use at home or in a restaurant. Don’t miss out on the chance to own this rare and sought-after dip.’

In a notice shared by the Food Standards Agency (FSA), Domino’s recommended people who bought the affected products before September 15 to ‘dispose of them’.

The recall was issued by FGS Ingredients Ltd, a catering food and drink supplier, for a raft of dips and sauces containing mustard powder.

Recalls don’t mean a product is gone for good. Typically customers are urged to turn or dispose of a product bought before a particular date because it’s unsafe.

While the manufacturer works on the issue, the product is removed from the supply chain but usually ends up back on the shelves and menus.

This is different from a withdrawal, where the product is taken out of the supply chain before it has reached shoppers.
