Ex-GOP senator — 'political royalty' in her state — snubs Trump

Retired Sen. Nancy Kassebaum (R-KS) – described as “political royalty” in her conservative state – joined two other prominent Kansas Republicans who threw their support behind Vice President Kamala Harris in a move that spurred swift reaction on social media Thursday night.

Kassebaum, who now goes by Nancy Kassebaum Baker, served in the Senate from December 1978 through January 1997. She was joined in her endorsement of Harris on Thursday by former Kansas state senator and Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger, and retired federal judge Deanell Reece Tacha, Fox News reported.

“This election presents a stark choice that is not easy for any of us. The Republican Party of Dwight D. Eisenhower, Bob Dole, Frank Carlson, Jan Meyers, and generations of Kansas leaders does not exist within the current Republican Party,” the former officials wrote in a statement shared with Fox News Digital.

“But, it requires Republicans speaking out and putting country over party when those values are at stake,” according to the statement.

“Thank you, Sen. Kassebaum,” George Conway, a conservative attorney and Lincoln Project co-founder, wrote on X.

“A little Republican Party history after former Kansas Sen. Nancy Kassebaum endorsed Kamala Harris,” wrote former Dallas Morning News editor Mede Nix. “She is the daughter of Alf Landon, former governor of Kansas who lost to FDR for president in 1936. This is Kansas political royalty.”

“Her political pedigree couldn’t be finer,” another user, @RussOnPolitics wrote on social media. “Her permission structure for GOP voters to cross party lines continues to strengthen.”

Harris has also been endorsed in recent weeks by former Rep. Liz Cheney (D-Wyo.), her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney and over 100 ex-GOP officials – all of whom have announced they would not be voting for former President Donald Trump.
