Ange Postecoglou reveals who would replace Son if he was injured
Tottenham may have taken a positive win from their Europa League opener this week, but there is also a concern that Heung-min Son may have picked up an injury. Speaking to the press today, Ange Postecoglou was asked what his plan is if his captain is indeed unfit.
Son injury is not ideal, but Spurs have options
Ange Postecoglou went with a fairly strong lineup for the visit of Qarabag on Thursday night, and it paid dividends as his Spurs side registered a concvincing 3-0 win to get their Europa League campaign off to a great start.
The downside is, Heung-min Son came off after 70 minutes with a suspected injury. Speaking to the press (via Football.London) after the game, Postecoglou insisted his captain was just ‘tired’ and that he had not spoke to the medical staff about the issue.
In today’s press conference, the Spurs boss confirmed Son is eager to train ahead of Sunday’s trip to Old Trafford and that he will continue to be assessed.
When asked by Football.London who would step in if Son were missing, Postecoglou explained that he has a few options, including Mikey Moore, who he suggested is indeed ready for proper first-team action.
Moore, Werner, or Kulusevski can step in on the left
Discussing his ideas for the left wing, Postecoglou said: “No, I wouldn’t say that [Mikey Moore is not ready]. We’ll see with Sonny. Obviously with Wilson [Odobert] out, we’re kind of limited and with Richy out, because Richy can play there as well.
“We are kind of limited but Timo [Werner] and Mikey can certainly come into the frame. We have Dejan Kulusevski who can play wide as well so we’ve got some options there, but firstly we’ll see how Sonny is.”
Mikey Moore should be above Werner in the pecking order
I have said it before, and I’ll say it again, Mikey Moore should be getting more opportunities than Timo Werner. It felt like a weird decision to give Werner get more minutes than Moore last night even though we were winning comfortably.
If Son is out for the United game this weekend, I would probably look to the likes of Brennan Johnson and Dejan Kulusevski to play out wide on both wings, as I just sadly don’t trust Werner to deliver. I hope he proves me wrong though.
