Hoddle claims one Spurs player is not comfortable in Postecoglou’s system
Glenn Hoddle suggests that one Tottenham Hotspur player is still trying to get used to the demands of Ange Postecoglou’s system.
Opportunities are hard to come by
The player Hoddle was referring to is Dragusin, who has struggled to get a run in the side since his switch from Genoa back in the January window, with Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven ahead of him in the pecking order.
The Romanian was handed a rare opportunity in the Europa League clash against Qarabag but his night lasted just seven minutes.
The 23-year-old was sent off after clumsily giving the ball away and then committing a foul, which was deemed to be a denial of a goalscoring opportunity by the referee.
Dragusin looks all at sea
Hoddle admitted that the central defender is yet to convince him in a Tottenham shirt, but confessed that the former Juventus man does have some useful qualities.
The Spurs legend suggested that the young defender is still coming to terms with playing in Postecoglou’s high line.
When asked about Dragusin, Hoddle told TNT Sports 1 (26/9/24 – 21:16): “I’ve seen him at the international level and he impressed me at times. I don’t feel he feels comfortable yet. I think it is a new club and the way that they hold the high line, I think he has got some slight problems with that.
“Maybe with his club sides before he hasn’t been used to doing that so I think the jury is still out with that one. He has got to improve a little bit on his defensive awareness, again, he can cope with the ball but has got room for improvement.
“I think there is a player in there, I really do but the high line with Spurs and the way Ange likes to play, he doesn’t feel quite at home at the moment.”
Dragusin needs a run of matches
Postecoglou and Johan Lange have made it clear that they only sign players who are specifically suited to playing in Tottenham’s system, and they thus see Dragusin as a good high-line defender.
However, it is difficult for any player to feel at home in a new set-up and a new league without getting minutes under their belt.
Dragusin impressed during the final couple of games of last season and it would not be unfair to judge him unless he has had a run of matches under his belt.
