Discussing the effects of androgenetic alopecia, the most common form of hair loss in men and women – she said it often starts for men at the temple area and women at the top of the head.

Hair loss and a lack of new hair growth can not only be frustrating, it can also completely ruin your confidence – leading you to fork out on pricey products that promise to solve the problem.

But the haircare expert revealed you don’t have to spend a fortune to get your hair growing again.

Doctor Bowring revealed: “Add coffee to shampoo for hair growth.”

She added: “So, caffeine has been proven to help with that hair growth,” and she displayed a study on the screen that supported the claims.

The doctor recommended taking the kitchen essential upstairs and mixing a small amount with your shampoo before applying it to your scalp.

“My tip here is to add just a teaspoon of ground coffee into your shampoo when you’re shampooing your hair, and then wash it out,” she advised.

Dr Bowring then warned that “it will make the hair a little bit darker”, so it would work “best for dark hair”.

You can expect to pay around £1 for a basic jar of instant coffee, Sainsbury’s offers a jar for just £1.05.

The clip has since gone viral on her TikTok account @j9naturally with over 100k views and 3,500 likes.

People were quick to ask for more details and thank the doctor in the comments section.

One person wrote: “I put rosemary essential oil in my shampoo, and my hair is coming back. I’ll have to try the coffee too. Thank you!!”

Another commented: “I will try thank you.”

Why does coffee stimulate hair growth?

Studies have shown coffee can help stimulate new hair growth - here's why our favourite morning drink works.

Coffee can stimulate hair growth primarily due to the presence of caffeine.

Caffeine is known to improve blood circulation, which can help deliver more nutrients to the hair follicles, potentially promoting hair growth.

Additionally, caffeine can counteract the effects of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone linked to hair loss.

By reducing the impact of DHT on hair follicles, caffeine may help in maintaining healthier hair growth cycles.

There are also topical treatments containing caffeine that are applied directly to the scalp.

These treatments aim to strengthen the hair shaft and stimulate the hair follicles, thereby encouraging growth.

However, while some studies suggest that caffeine can be beneficial for hair growth, more extensive research is needed to fully understand its efficacy and the best methods of application.

“Does it have to be instant coffee? or can you use used coffee from a cafeteria? I understand why instant is best due to it dissolving. just asking,” penned a third.

Meanwhile a fourth said: “Will try this!!”

“Instant coffee??” asked a fifth which the doctor said was fine to use.

Someone else added: “I mix it with pumpkin seed oil and leave it on for an hour… I’ve seen a massive change.””
