Emmerdale star reveals huge storyline ahead after ‘disappearing’ from ITV soap for months

ITV viewers will be happy to see the return of actress Louise Jameson as she picks back up as Mary Goskirk in the soap.

Emmerdale viewers had become concerned after Mary just seemed to disappear from scenes without warning, with some wondering where she’d got to.

Mary, who is Rhona Goskirk’s mother, had been a prominent character on screen for the ITV soap alongside daughter Rhona and her ex Gus.

With Gus using Rhona’s embryos to have daughter Ivy alongside his new partner, who later died, it’s been a strong storyline looking at rights over IVF and parenting.

With Rhona now looking after baby Ivy, Mary has been playing the role of doting grandmother but now she will be getting a bigger focus.

Speaking to the Mirror at the Inside Soap Awards, Louise revealed: “They’ve given me such an easy summer, I can’t tell you. But apparently November is really going to hot up.”

She also shared that Mary has still been in the village and not fully written out as she added: “She’s being the supportive grandmother in the background. I think she is looking after Ivy a lot backstage. She’s singing the baby to sleep.”

She also hinted that the new storyline will see her in a new place in the village, as she takes up position behind the bar at The Woolpack.

Louise also revealed that her new job will see ‘Spiky Mary’ return as she breaks up fights and tackles drama head on.

She explained: “I sort out a couple of rows so the spiky Mary is on her way back. I was so pleased.

“When they say you are gonna be behind the bar you think, you’re only there for a year and then every year you’re told it’s a year.

“When you are put behind the bar you think it might be a bit longer.”

Louise has been playing Mary Goskirk in Emmerdale since 2022.

She has previously appeared in series as Doctor Who, Tenko, Bergerac and EastEnders.

When she was 23-years-old, she appeared in Emmerdale for the first time as the character of Sharon Crossthwaite, who became the first person to ever be killed on the show.

Landing the role of Mary in her fifties, Louise has previously spoken out about the struggles of getting a job with regard to her age as she explained: “I felt, as a middle-aged actress, that I had been suddenly totally overlooked.

“My career took a severe dip, and the only way I could get a foot back in the door was either by going back into competition with late-30s, early-40s women…there are plenty about, very beautiful…or creating my own work.

“There didn’t seem to be an alternative, because, with those of us who have lasted this long, the competition’s very very steep.

“Really to immobilise your face when you’re in the business of communicating is an oxymoron. It just doesn’t seem to make sense.”
