Israel bars UN Chief Antonio Guterres from entering the country
Israel’s Foreign Minister has barred UN Secretary-General António Guterres from entering the country due to his failure to condemn Iran’s large-scale missile attack on Israel explicitly.
According to media reports, Israel’s Foreign Minister Yisrael Katz announced in a statement on Wednesday, October 2, that “António Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, is a persona non grata in Israel, and his entry will be prohibited.”
Katz explained that this decision was made in response to Guterres’ reaction to Iran’s attacks on Israel, as the UN Secretary-General did not condemn Iran’s actions.
Katz also accused Guterres of harboring hatred toward Israel, calling him a “disgrace” in the history of the United Nations.
Following Iran’s missile attack on Israel on Tuesday, António Guterres issued a statement saying, “I condemn the escalation of conflicts in the Middle East.”
The UN Secretary-General expressed regret over the “cycle of tension escalating on top of tension” and emphasized that this “must stop” and “we must achieve a ceasefire.”
The strained relationship between Israel and the United Nations has reached a new low with this decision, highlighting Israel’s dissatisfaction with the international community’s response to its security concerns. This tension may further complicate efforts to resolve conflicts in the region.
