Harry Redknapp can’t believe Spurs star doesn’t start much for his country
Harry Redknapp believes that Ange Postecoglou has been backed with a brilliant signing by Tottenham Hotspur, but he should start more for his country.
Unknown quantity to world-class in a year
The player Redknapp is referring to is Micky van de Ven, who was an unknown quantity to Premier League fans when he arrived from Wolfsburg last year.
However, the defender’s stock has risen substantially over the last 12 months and he is now widely considered to be one of the best in the Premier League.
While his ability on the ball and his reading of the game is impressive for someone so young, what separates him from others is his electric pace, with the Dutchman having the ability to eat up ground when he turns on his afterburners.
Redknapp’s words of praise
The 23-year-old hardly put a foot wrong at Old Trafford, sensing and mopping up at the back expertly while also producing the assist of the season so far.
In just the third minute of the game, Van de Ven won the ball deep in Tottenham’s own half and sprinted all the way to the touchline before squaring the ball for Brennan Johnson to tap home.
Discussing the Netherlands star’s performance, Redknapp told talkSPORT: “He looks a great signing. What amazes me is during the Euros this year, he couldn’t get into the Dutch team. I was shocked.
“Hang on, how are they that good that he can’t get into the team? Surely they will find a place for him somewhere, if you played three at the back, you could play him at left-back even. There will be space for him somewhere in the Dutch team. He looks a Rolls-Royce, proper player.”
Tottenham’s brilliant recruitment
It is fair to say that there were doubts regarding Van de Ven and Guglielmo Vicario when Spurs secured the pair in the summer of 2023.
Some even felt that the Lilywhites were taking the cheaper option rather than spending big on Edmond Tapsoba or David Raya.
However, Tottenham’s decisions have been vindicated, and at the moment, it appears as if the club have pulled off another masterstroke with the signing of Dominic Solanke.
