Gordon Ramsay trademarks signature insult to use in London restaurant after meme of him using it is watched 14m times

GORDON RAMSAY has often turned the air blue on Hell’s Kitchen and Kitchen Nightmares.

Now he’s about to use some more unpleasant language — by trying to trademark the word: “idiot.”

It’s not entirely clear why Gordon is making this odd application to the Intellectual Property Office.

But it probably has something to do with his Idiot Sandwich, which is on the menu of his Bread Street Kitchen & Bar chain.

An expert said: “Although it is a strange step, it is also a smart one, because one of Gordon’s most unusual culinary inventions is unusual precisely because of this word.

“This means nobody else will be able to use it in conjunction with a product without his permission, therefore no other product can appear to be related to his unique invention.”

The concept of an idiot sandwich came from a meme that took the internet by storm in 2015.

It first appeared in a sketch on The Late Late Show With James Corden entitled “Hell’s Cafeteria”.

The clip, which is a parody of Gordon’s Hell’s Kitchen show, has since been watched 14million times online.

It sees the celebrity chef holding slices of bread either side of TV star Julie Chen’s face and shouting: “What are you?” She replies: “An idiot sandwich.”

Gordon, who also trademarked the name “idiot sandwich”, is not the only one trying to protect unusual words or phrases they have devised.

Great British Bake Off bosses did it with judge Paul Hollywood’s “Hollywood Handshake” phrase and Paris Hilton did the same with her “That’s Hot” saying at the height of her fame.

But trademarking “idiot” might just be the smartest move of all.

Charlie, who explores the phenomenon in his new series Myth Country, says all his family have snubbed him for not believing they are made by UFOs.

He revealed: “My family have strong opinions on crop circles being alien-made, which is fine. But I had to leave our WhatsApp group.”

The series, which also sees Charlie explore legends such as King Arthur, launches on BBC Three on Friday.

But filming was not without its challenges, especially at night.

Charlie said: “It was 2am, and we were on a dogging site, but didn’t realise until someone flashed their headlights.”
