Marina Bahia Golfito and University of Costa Rica Collaborate on New Auditorium and Marine Research Initiatives

Marina Bahia Golfito (MBG)—a premier destination for superyachts, sportfishing, and eco-tourism—and the University of Costa Rica (UCR) have announced the grand opening of UCR’s new state-of-the-art auditorium in Golfito, Costa Rica. With a seating capacity of 200, this facility will serve as a hub for university events, seminars, research presentations, and exhibitions on diverse topics, including conservation.

UCR’s Ambitious Future Plans for Golfito

In addition to the new auditorium, UCR has ambitious plans for further infrastructure development in Golfito over the next several years. These new projects will include:

  • dedicated classroom building
  • research and computing laboratory facility
  • semi-Olympic swimming pool
  • An athletics track
  • An indoor multipurpose sports field

These enhancements not only reflect UCR’s commitment to providing high-quality educational and recreational opportunities for students, but also demonstrate the university’s dedication to enriching the local community.

Collaboration Between MBG and UCR for Sustainable Development

“Marina Bahía Golfito has shown great openness to collaborate on harmonizing its construction proposals with our academic infrastructure,” says Luis Carlos Núñez Masís, UCR Director. Additionally, he emphasizes MBG and Enjoy Group Costa Rica’s strong corporate social responsibility program, highlighting two key joint initiatives:

  • Developing the sport of rowing
  • Promoting marine research with the support of CIMAR, the International SeaKeepers Society, and Misión Tiburón

Advancing Marine Conservation through MBG and SeaKeepers Partnership

Moreover, a major focus of the sustainable development at Marina Bahia Golfito is marine conservation. For this purpose, MBG has partnered with the International SeaKeepers Society to establish a research center in the region. According to Pedro Abdalla, MBG’s Director, this collaboration has led to detailed discussions with Luis Carlos Muñoz, Golfito’s UCR Director, CIMAR, and renowned UCR biologist Jorge Cortés. Together, they are developing a master plan guiding research on marine conservation.

Benefits for the Golfito Region and Costa Rica

This collaborative effort promises significant benefits not only for Golfito, but also for the entire southern region of Costa Rica. As a result, these joint projects will attract scientists to conduct research in the Golfo Dulce and Cocos Island. Meanwhile, the planned facilities, labs, and classrooms will focus on ocean-related disciplines, enhancing the region’s reputation as a center for marine research.

“This ambitious project represents a unique opportunity for Golfito and for Costa Rica as a whole,” concludes Abdalla, “positioning us as global leaders in marine research and conservation.”
