Equine plays role St. Landry Parish economy

ST. LANDRY PARISH, La. (KLFY) -- St. Landry Parish, also called the Equine Capital of Louisiana, has a rich equine history that plays a role in the parish economy.

That growth continues with the newly refurbished and reopened Louisiana Equine Sales and Events Center on Harry Guilbeau Road.

The facility has more than 200 horse stalls and multiple barns for livestock. Almost all of those horse stalls were in use just this past week as they held their first sales event.

Bill Roider, of the St. Landry Parish Economic Development, said a little more than 200 horses were registered for the sales event.

By all accounts, the sale was a very successful sale. And we'd like to not only continue with this sale, I think with that facility, I think the idea would be to try to bring in different types of sales of different breeds of horses through that facility," Rodier said.

With events at the equine center, rodeos at the AG arena, races at Evangeline Downs and other local events and venues, Rodier said there are many ways to support the equine industry in St. Landry Parish.

"So, there's different genres of horses that we have in the area that we can kind of help promote and grow better, or already have maybe have some roots in St. Landry but they just need a little bit of watering, if you will, to help them grow," Rodier said.
