Louisiana residents beware of Hurricane Francine insurance claim scams
NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Residents across Louisiana are being warned by the Louisiana Department of Insurance of online scams regarding Hurricane Francine insurance claims.
According to LDI officials, there has been an increase in online advertisements attempting to mislead or scam consumers recovering from Francine.
They have reported seeing false websites used to exploit trending searches, phishing personal information, transmitting viruses and sending malware.
“Though we have increased our focus on insurance fraud activities and invested in new programs to monitor for these bad actors, I’m urging residents to use caution when searching for insurance information online, particularly searches related to Hurricane Francine insurance claims,” said Commissioner Tim Temple.
The LDI is offering the following tips to prevent being scammed and safeguard online searches:
- Obtain information from trusted sources like the LDI’s website or mobile app.
- Use trusted web browsers like Google Chrome, Apple Safari or Microsoft Edge.
- Always verify each link in search results before clicking on them.
- Use security software and anti-virus detection software to safeguard your device.
- Keep device software updated to help detect vulnerabilities.
“We will continue to actively monitor for this type of activity and take appropriate action to protect consumers," said Temple.
